Elimination Communication Secret # 1: Keep Your Approach Light-hearted – Have Fun.

Elimination Communication Secret # 1: Keep Your Approach Light-hearted – Have Fun.

Elimination Communication is a traditional practice in many parts of the world, even today.

Yet in our ‘modern’ societies this knowledge was lost a few generations ago and if we want to do it with our babies, we need to re-discover the approaches and attitudes needed to do it successfully.

The 7 Secrets to Elimination Communication give you these attitudes and approaches – positive ones – that you need to get started, or perhaps continue, with the correct mind-set. In this secret you will discover how important it is to focus on the fun of offering potty breaks, to ENJOY the process.

For baby potty training is a process, not a destination. It is a gentle, cooperative, joint process between you and your baby. Thinking it is a matter of teaching a few cues and baby will perform on command is w-r-o-n-g, and to do so will cause frustration and burn out. If you know you are a performance- driven person, EC probably isn’t the thing for you, as it ebbs and flows, it isn’t a straight line of improvement leading to early toilet training. Training in the sense of ‘infant or baby potty training’ is used as a term to give access to the concept for people researching for the term online, and as a term meaning learning together.

“When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.” Joe Namath

It is very important for you to develop and then maintain a light-hearted approach to practising EC. Have fun as you offer ‘pee breaks’ to your baby, sing songs, have a giggle at misses and see everything that happens within the ‘big picture’ – a gentle ongoing learning opportunity for your baby – and yourself. Attending to pees and poos is of course just one aspect of your baby’s life, although it is so exciting and addictive to tune in this way, it is also important to keep balance and perspective – there is always another wee on the way.

What are three keys to keeping a light-hearted approach?

1. Engage your sense of humour – Chuckle when you miss a wee. Cheer when you catch a wee. … enjoy yourself; you are parenting your baby, caring for their needs; how wonderful.. Use nappies if you are feeling distracted; use diapers when you are out of the home, or always between offers if you prefer, at least for a while – there is more about this in an upcoming secret. EC is something you do together with your baby, as a team, getting it ‘right’ isn’t important – moving forwards and being responsive is.

2. Recognise this – a ‘potty opportunity’ is just an offer or an invitation for baby to relieve themselves – they wont always need to go and we mustn’t become stressed over counting catches and misses – they are essentially unimportant so long as the communication is kept up. Having a simple attitude of ‘going with the flow’ as you learn and practise together is ideal. Aim to see invitations for baby to use the toilet place as no different from offering a friend a coffee, or a snack – think nothing if they say “No, thanks”. On an emotional level, consider a missed wee as if it were a spilled drink – oops, better change that nappy. (Better wipe that up.)

3. Make up funny terms for patterns you notice, stages you pass through. It is fun and helpful. For instance, the “Morning pee frenzy” – when small babies may pee several times in rapid succession after waking, or the “crawling floods”. Knowing how normal it is for babies to have lots of ‘misses’ in these stages helps you to have an unemotional response – it is to be expected; use appropriate protection. Baby is doing their best – so are you.

So, remember Secret #1 to Developing Your Elimination Communication Confidence: Keep your approach light-hearted – have fun.

Easing Into EC Tip #1: Ask Your Baby…

As elimination communication is such a respectful and cooperative practice, begin by talking to your baby about what you’ll be doing together, perhaps like this;

“Hey Baby, I’d like to try this ‘EC’ thing with you; we’ll do it together. I’m sure we’ll have fun. I’ll feel a bit silly at first and we’ll surely get our wires crossed at times, but that’s OK – we’ll do our best… have patience with me. Soon, we’ll have you wearing a few less diapers, won’t that be great?”

So, be a team from the start, cooperate and empathise with each other.

Have fun connecting,

Charndra

P.S. Being part-time nappy free IS fun – lots of fun – every time you have a go and ‘click’ with your baby’s needs, well, it just brings JOY to your heart. There should be no stress involved, just striving for greater connection and personal growth as a parent and baby – as a co-operative team. Discover More About How to Get Started with Elimination Communication…

The Elimination Communication Classic Squat Position:

– This photo shows me holding baby Jett in the classic EC Squat position.

It aids easy elimination, and is the traditional way of holding a baby.

A newborn is supported by your body, as they are until they can sit on a potty.

This ‘In arms’ position is great as you can offer a quick wee when out over a loo or a discrete bush when out hiking to keep that diaper dry a bit longer.

Starting Elimination Communication With Your Baby: A Step by Step Guide to EC…

Starting Elimination Communication With Your Baby: A Step by Step Guide to EC…

Elimination Communication – what a cumbersome word, right?

I’ve always liked to call it ‘Baby Pottying’, though it is also called a plethora of names like infant or baby potty training, natural infant hygiene or assisted infant toiletting!

What they all mean is that you help your baby to go to the toilet somewhere other than in their nappy or diaper, some of the time, using a combination of cue sounds, common timing opportunities, spotting signs, developing joint signals and refining your intuition.

Mothers are attracted to this concept for many reasons. Perhaps it  caught your attention for one of these reasons:

  • To save money on diapers. Disposable diapers used full time for a minimum of two years will set you back a decent wodge of cash, that’s for sure, and if you end up having two or three kids, this number can run into thousands…
  • As a ‘new’ way to bond with your baby. Many mothers are attracted to the unmistakeable appeal of ‘knowing’ their baby so well that they can anticipate baby’s need to wee or poo and help them do it on a potty or toilet rather that have to always clean up after the fact. Among mothers who didn’t know about elimination communication, I’ll bet every single one of them knows their baby’s ‘poo face’, they just didn’t know of the reasonable and traditional option of popping baby on a potty at those times…
  • Simply for the benefit of skipping messy nappy changes. That’s a no-brainer. Poopy nappies are yuk. Everyone would like to change them less. Imaging skipping 50% of them? 80% of them? Some families skip nearly all messy diaper changes, and merely have wet nappies to change. It simplifies things considerably…
  • As part of a general natural approach to baby care. Some mothers find elimination communication when they adopt certain more natural parenting styles, such as extended breastfeeding past 6 months, or co-sleeping with their baby so everyone gets more sleep, or baby wearing to keep baby calm and happy. Others discover baby potty training first then discover these ideas flow naturally out of that, making their elimination communication easier. If you’ve read other articles on my site, you’ll have seen how each of these ideas makes EC easier…
  • For Sustainability and Environmentalism. More of a bonus is the positive feelings about helping reduce the environmental impact of a baby, which can be quite considerable, considering they are a tiny little thing! Each potty visit means less resources used, which is ultimately a feel-good vibe for us as parents. It’s nice to know that your baby sometimes uses the toilet just as you would, nothing disposable heading off to the dump, little or less need for wipes, and plastic nappy bags, and less laundry washing…

So, how DO you get started with Elimination Communication?

A step by step guide will help you to dive right into this ancient and traditional practice… You can follow along, read through some strategies and incorporate them straight into your day from the start. Starting tomorrow, starting today!

A stage by stage guide to doing baby potty training will allow you to fast-track months of finding your way by trial and error. Having a clear series of activities to master will rocket your discoveries about your baby as you develop a singular confidence about how ec works within your own unique lifestyle.

Rather than wondering if and when to start, simply start. Babies are smart, and so are you! Babies are adaptable and so are you. Except, elimination communication in the modern way does not require adaptation – you still rely on nappies or diapers in between potty visits to give you peace of mind, a clean environment as it were.

Folks who tell you that to do elimination communication means you must remove the nappy for good and stagger through a confusing and messy stage of frustrating learning to do it ‘right’ are just deluding themselves and are really a bit misguided. Diapers were invented for a reason, and you will use them when starting EC and at different stages of baby potty training, be reassured of that! You can discover an easier way.

With Elimination communication you can enhance the communication you share with your baby in amazing ways, allowing you to use less diapers, buy less diapers, change and wash less diapers and be ‘done’ with them sooner than the average of approaching three years in the things that is common these days.

Perhaps you are saying to yourself something like: Yes, I’ve heard about EC and want to do it, but where do I start?

Infant Potty Training – What is it?

Infant Potty Training eBook – Your Part Time EC eBook

Infant Potty Training is also known as Elimination Communication, having a Diaper Free Baby or going nappy free.

Infant potty training is a term used to describe an ancient, gentle approach to baby hygiene involving observing your baby, noticing signals they make before weeing and pooing, and anticipating their need to go by removing their nappy or diaper and offering them the change to relieve themselves in a potty, the toilet, even a simple bucket. Saves you washing that nappy.

When baby goes, you’d make a ‘cue’ sound, like ‘sss’, which they can begin to remember at future opportunities, and can then go ‘on cue’. It’s as simple as that, but of course more complex, as a baby is not a robot to program! Infant potty training is thus another option to fold into your day – perhaps at each diaper change you will offer baby a potty break as you sing a potty song and smile at them. Make sure the potty is warm or they may get spooked, though!
